What is primary care?
When you feel sick or have a medical concern, what do you do? The medical professional with which you have the first point or ‘primary’ point of contact with, is your primary care provider, or PCP, a term most people and insurance companies are familiar with. At Callen-Lorde, we believe primary care is much more than that. Primary care means caring for your whole self, not just when you’re sick. Primary care means preventive care – mental health screenings and interventions, dental care and oral health, sexual health, social services and more – all coordinated across a team of professionals from doctors to nurses, medical assistants to the folks at the pharmacy who fill your prescription. At the center of this, we believe in the importance of cultural competency and health justice for LGBTQ people, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or socioeconomic status. In addition to the direct health services we provide, we seek to close the gap in health disparities for LGBTQ communities around the globe through policy and advocacy, education and research.
