Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Options - Callen-Lorde

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Options

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) stops an HIV infection after a possible exposure.

Possible instances where PEP might be right for you

You could consider taking PEP to prevent HIV infection if you’ve experienced the following:

  • A condom breaks during sex
  • You didn’t use a condom during sex
  • A partner discloses they are living with HIV and not taking their medications consistently or  you are unsure if they are taking medication (learn more about “U=U” here)
  • You share a needle or syringe with someone to inject drugs or hormones
  • You get “stuck” by a needle that was used on someone else (For work-related needle stick exposures, we recommend first seeking care with your employee occupational health office)
  • You experience sexual assault

PEP works when you follow specific guidelines:

  • You must start the medication as soon as possible or at least within 72 hours after the exposure
  • You must take it for 28 days consecutively after the exposure

We encourage you to come to Callen-Lorde as soon as possible after exposure to start PEP. Callen-Lorde is always here for you and your needs. Call 212-271-7200 or come in to see if PEP is right for you.

Accessing PEP

You do not have to be a patient at Callen-Lorde to access PEP. Find our walk-in PEP service hours here, and be aware that it might take 2-3 hours to get the medication when you come to the clinic.

Paying for PEP

Most insurances including Medicare and Medicaid cover PEP and there are options available for underinsured or uninsured patients.

  • There are a range of support co-pay cards from pharmaceutical companies for insured or underinsured patients
  • Uninsured patients may qualify for a Medication Assistance Program which covers the cost of medication. Click here for details
  • New York City’s 844-3-PEPNYC hotline connects patients with a PEP access starter pack and providers, regardless of insurance status. Find details here

If Callen-Lorde is closed when you need PEP…
