Care is Our Resistance - Callen-Lorde

Care is Our Resistance

Since Callen-Lorde’s inception, we have pioneered healthcare equity in the spirit of resistance—and with a deep commitment to fighting stigma and health disparities. We continue to fight on the frontlines of the HIV epidemic and provide comprehensive and high-quality care regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. We also advocate tirelessly for policies that protect the LGBTQ+ community both nationally and locally.

Today, Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage is still alive in our care and advocacy work—particularly in the last 18 months as threats mount against our communities.

We’ve continued to be there for our patients and have championed advocacy initiatives to increase protections and investments during this challenging time.

That’s why this year’s Pride theme is Care is Our Resistance. In this moment we cannot relent. We’ve never stopped providing whole-person, affirming care — and we never will.

About the Artist

This year’s original Pride art was generously created by friend of Callen-Lorde, Hey Rooney!

Rooney (he/him) is a designer and illustrator based in Los Angeles. Raised in a devout Mormon household, his coming-out journey has shaped his artistic approach: an utterly unapologetic embrace of queerness. His work explores the complex issues around gender and sexuality with a wink and a nudge. Drawing heavy inspiration from queer ephemera, Rooney hopes to honor that heritage, challenge [boring] norms, and spark conversations about the queer experience.

Why Care and Resistance?

Our visuals are inspired by historic advocacy signage and flyers, harkening back to our grassroots history and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights throughout the decades. Together, we will boldly celebrate our community in all its diversity, while showcasing the groundbreaking care we provide.

Our past is something we carry into the future. Our ability to stand up for patients is made possible because of the advocates who came before, including our namesakes, who are each honored and celebrated within the artwork.

At the heart of the theme is “care” that is consistent and unwavering, and “resistance” that is personal and always adaptable. Callen-Lorde’s commitment to caring for everyone, regardless of identity, will never change because healthcare and compassion are intrinsic to our resistance.

We hope you’ll join Callen-Lorde throughout Pride season as we show up, show out and ask our community: What does care look like for you?

Will you help us fund our lifesaving care?

What are Party and Prevention Kits?

Party and Prevention kits are designed to keep our community protected and educated while they have fun throughout Pride season. Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, and legendary NYC nightlife icon, Susanne Bartsch, announced the kits together in this video.

What’s inside? Each Party and Prevention kit includes an OraQuick HIV self-test, PrEP on-demand, DoxyPEP, naloxone, fentanyl and xylazine test strips, condoms, lube, dental dams, lip balm, sunscreen, hand sanitizer and Plan B (by request).

How can I get one? Kits are distributed for free at Callen-Lorde Chelsea every Friday and Saturday in June from 12-3PM (except on Juneteenth).

About Our Namesakes

While community members are familiar with Michael Callen and Audre Lorde as Callen-Lorde’s central namesakes, our legacy has expanded thanks to the tireless contributions of community leaders that transformed the organization’s work and scope of services.

This includes Thea Spyer and the Thea Spyer Center focused on behavioral health services for the LGBTQ+ community; Keith Haring and the Keith Haring Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Fellowship in LGBTQ+ Health, a training program enhancing the knowledge and experience of LGBTQ+ healthcare practitioners; and Cecilia Genitili and her founding of the COIN (Cecilia’s Occupational Inclusion Network) Clinic, a free program for sex workers to get the healthcare they need in an affirming and supportive environment. This Pride season and beyond, Callen-Lorde honors our five namesakes and their meaningful and material roles they have played in ensuring LGBTQ+ health equity.
