NY Safe Haven for Transgender Youth and Families Act Signed into Law
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The NY Safe Haven for Transgender
Youth and Families Act Signed into Law
NEW YORK (June 25, 2023) — Today New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed The NY Safe Haven for Transgender Youth and Families Act into law.
“The passage of this bill highlights New York’s progressive values and reiterates that health care for all is a human right. New York State once again sets itself apart from other states that are waging misinformation wars against the transgender community and ignoring scientific evidence to hurt transgender adolescents and their families, as well as attacking the doctor-patient relationship. On behalf of the youth we serve, we are very grateful to Senator Hoylman-Sigal, Assembly Member Bronson, Assembly Member Simone, Governor Kathy Hochul and all our elected and legislative partners for their leadership. New York can now join the growing number of states that are becoming safe havens for transgender youth and their families. Beyond being a life-saving measure, this law sends a clear message to transgender youth that we see them for who they are and that we are committed to helping them achieve the bright futures that they deserve and that our communities need.” Dr. Uri Belkind, Associate Director of Medicine – Adolescent Medicine and Aruna Krishnakumar, Managing Director of Adolescent and Mobile Health, Callen-Lorde Community Health Center
“The New York Safe Haven for Transgender Youth and Families Act tells young TGNB New Yorkers and their families that they belong, they are protected, and they are loved. We are glad to have you call New York your home and are committed to keeping our state a place where you can live with dignity and respect,” Dr. Andrew Goodman, Site Medical Director, Callen-Lorde Chelsea
