Callen-Lorde’s record-breaking 2024 Community Health Awards
Callen-Lorde’s 24th annual Community Health Awards broke fundraising records as more than 650 individuals from our community, staff and supporters came together to uplift each other in an unprecedented time.
The event raised money through both the silent auction and in-the-room fundraising at the dinner, bringing our total to a record $800,000. The funding will directly support Callen-Lorde’s programs and help us reach new patients who need our affirming and lifesaving care.
Perhaps most importantly, the event was a beacon of hope in uncertain times. Just two days after a divisive, concerning election for many, CHA brought people together to celebrate and find solace in our community. Guests danced, laughed and held each other throughout the night in a space where everyone was welcome and everyone could feel seen.
To that end, CEO Patrick McGovern delivered a speech that revolved around Callen-Lorde’s history of resistance and commitment to caring for our patients–no matter the political landscape. Patrick had spent last Wednesday walking the halls of the Brooklyn clinic to be with staff and patients, listen to fears and offer solidarity.
“It’s clear that after the week we’ve had, we need to be together,” he said in his speech, which you can watch on our YouTube channel. “No American election should feel like an existential threat. The clinics were busy, as if the safe space was beckoning.
“For 55 years Callen-Lorde has stood as a tunnel of hope,” he continued. “Hope born of resistance, resilience, and the firm conviction that we will never go back—never go back to days of fear, isolation and self-doubt. I can say this much clearly tonight: our mission does not change with the political winds. What we do is essential. For countless individuals, our care is a lifeline, especially when majorities threaten our lives and our identities.”
Patrick used his speech to call the room to action—to work with us as we navigate the uncertain path forward. He said Callen-Lorde must stand taller and push harder to advocate for our and our communities’ futures—and received a standing ovation.
Thank you to our staff, volunteers, supporters and communities for their tireless work in making this event a success, even in uncertain times. Callen-Lorde looks forward to the work ahead with all of you who make what we do possible.
