Transgender Day of Visibility: Honoring, Uplifting, and Taking Action

Every year on Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), we take a moment to celebrate transgender resilience, recognize the contributions of transgender individuals, and reflect on the ongoing work to ensure that all people can live openly and authentically. In a world where transgender lives are constantly under attack, visibility is a form of resistance. It’s a refusal to be erased. It’s a way of saying: we’re still here, we always have been, and we always will be.

But visibility alone is not enough—it must be backed by real support and action. This year, TDOV feels especially significant for the Callen-Lorde community—our staff, our patients, and everyone who walks through our doors. As conversations around transgender rights and healthcare continue across the country, we are reminded of why the work we do is essential. For over 50 years, Callen-Lorde has been a leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare, and we remain deeply committed to providing affirming, high-quality care to the transgender community.

To provide a visible show of solidarity, we have designed and distributed Protect Transgender Health buttons, available to both staff and patients at all Callen-Lorde sites. Staff members can check in with their site supervisors to pick up a button for free, and patients are welcome to take one as well. It’s a small but meaningful way to acknowledge the importance of access to inclusive, affirming healthcare.

Visibility is not only about representation—it is about uplifting the voices of those who have led the fight for transgender rights. To highlight their impact, we have created profiles of transgender activists that will be displayed on our clinics’ screens throughout the upcoming days. Their stories serve as a powerful reminder of the progress made, the challenges ahead, and the resilience of transgender communities.

For those looking to engage further, we have compiled a list of TDOV events happening across New York City, now available on our Instagram. Whether attending a rally, a panel discussion, or a community gathering, these events offer an opportunity to connect, learn, and reflect on the significance of transgender visibility.

At Callen-Lorde, standing with the transgender community is not limited to one day—it is embedded in our history, our mission, and the work we do every single day. From our Transgender Health Services to our ongoing research and education efforts, we remain dedicated to ensuring that transgender individuals have access to high-quality, affirming healthcare and the resources they need to thrive.

Visibility is powerful, but true support goes beyond being seen. It requires action, dedication, and a commitment to care.

Today, and every day, Callen-Lorde stands with the transgender community.
